NEWS : Cuil, rival to Google launched
good morning Friends:
Cuil, a rival to Google, was launched yesterday by former top Google engineers. though some say it is a potential Google killer, it had a disastrous start and would not return the search results that it should have. also, the servers seem to be overloaded with the large number of users attempting to use it. A group of former Google engineers on Monday launched a rival Internet search engine, Cuil, saying it is an improved version of the world’s most popular Web-scouring tool.
Cuil’s founders are taking unabashed aim at their one-time workplace, claiming they out search Google when it comes to depth and breadth on the rapidly expanding Internet.
“The Internet is getting bigger and more disorganized every day,” Cuil’s founders said in a posting on the website that went live Monday at www.cuil.com.
“We’ve developed new architecture and algorithms that can handle the exponential growth of the Internet and organize results that reflect its enormous complexity.”
Cuil says that unlike Google, which reportedly ignores seldom visited or obscure websites in its index, Cuil doesn’t discriminate and has packed 120 billion Internet pages in its index.

New search engine Cuil has opened to the public, and with it, the requisite comparisons and challenges to Google, former employer of Cuil’s engineering team. But the site is experiencing much downtime in its first day.
Built with $33 million in venture capital from Greylock Partners, Madrone Capital Partners, and Tugboat Ventures, Cuil is made up of an all-star team of Web technology veterans. The husband and wife founders are Tom Costello, creator of Xift, and Anna Patterson, creator of Recall, a technology now used by Google. Rounding out the team are ex-Google engineers Russell Power and Louis Monier, also the ex-CTO of AltaVista.

Cuil Search Engine

Cuil presents us a simplistic fast loading front page that uses a black background color in contrast to Google’s white. The real surprise awaits users after typing in a search term and hitting the Search button; The results are not displayed in rows but in columns. The user can choose a layout with two or three columns. The amount of search results shown remains the same but the three column layout makes good use of widescreen monitors.
Search results are also mixed with images that do not always seem to come from the website that the result links to. A click on the image does however load the same link. This could however cause some confusion by visitors who expect to see the image on that website.

>From when most of the press coverage began until late in the day, users going to Cuil got a message “no results because of a high load…Due to excessive load, our servers didn’t return results. Please try your search again.”
